Description
The Northchurch War Memorial, erected in 1920, honors those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. A replacement plinth was added in the 1960s, and the original plinth now stands about 5 meters south-west of the memorial.
Both the memorial and the detached plinth are made of limestone. The memorial features a rough-hewn Celtic cross adorned with carved Celtic decoration, set on a battered plinth with a single step. The south-west side of the plinth, which faces High Street, is inscribed with the words: ‘IN MEMORY OF/ ALL THOSE WHO/ HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE SERVICE/ OF THEIR COUNTRY’.
The former plinth, located inside the churchyard boundary wall, displays leaded lettering on its south-west side, facing High Street, stating: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN/ MEMORY OF/ NORTHCHURCH MEN/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR KING AND COUNTRY/ 1914 – 1919’. The names of those who died in the First World War are recorded in leaded lettering on the south-east and north-west sides of the plinth. Later additions include the dates of the Second World War (1939-1945) and the names of the fallen, which are inscribed on the north-east side of the plinth, facing the church.
