Description

Edgeworth House is a 16th-century building with brick foundations and a timber framework that incorporates elements from the 16th century. It was remodeled in the late 18th century, with the date 1767 carved on the brick of the northwest chimney stack. The house was altered and enlarged in the 19th century with the addition of an east wing. The main west block features a stucco front, a hipped Welsh slated roof, and has two storeys and a basement that forms the ground floor at the back elevation. It has a plinth, tall pilasters, an eaves band, and a parapet. There are three nearly flush sash windows with glazing bars and jalousies, as well as two Venetian windows at the back. The east wing is made of brick, partially rendered, and also has a Welsh slated roof, with two storeys and two flush sash windows with glazing bars. The eaves have a cornice, and there is a projecting bay on the left side of the east wing that features a doorway accessed by stone steps with iron railings. The entrance has an eight-panel door, with six panels being flush and ornamental glazing bars in the fanlight, surrounded by attached Greek Ionic columns. The entablature has a central tablet, with the architrave and frieze broken forward over the columns, and a panel above with a balustrade. Inside, the house boasts elegant late 18th-century plasterwork, particularly in the octagonal room, which has ceiling decoration and garlands around arched niches. Maria Edgeworth, the novelist, lived here as a child with her parents from 1716 to 1781. The house was originally known as The Limes and was renamed Edgeworth House in 1911.
