Description
Devon House is a house located at the right end of a terrace on High Street in Yetminster, dating from the early to mid-18th century. It features rubble stone walls and a slate roof with coped gables and brick end stacks. The building has two storeys and an L-shaped plan, with a projecting rear wing on the left side. A flat band runs at first floor level. The entrance consists of a six-panel moulded door set in a moulded stone surround, topped by a shallow segmental hood supported by brackets with ball pendants.
On the ground floor, there are two four-light stone mullion windows with moulded stone surrounds, featuring chamfered mullions with flat fillets and casements that include a central horizontal bar. The first floor has two three-light windows and one two-light window, all similar in style. The later rear range creates a double-pile plan with parallel roofs, and the rear wing, originally an outbuilding, includes a stable and a part-demolished barn.
Inside, the left ground floor room has a large open fireplace with a curved timber lintel. Although the interior has been much altered, the original roof structure remains, featuring coupled common rafters without a ridge piece. The design of the house is an interesting transition from sub-medieval to classical style.
