Description
Oak House Stores is a shop with living accommodation above, originally built as one unit with Minster Cottage. The building dates to 1607, as indicated by an enriched date stone above the door bearing initials. It has rubble stone walls and a slate roof with a coped gable at the right end, featuring a simulated circular stack at the apex. The building is two storeys high with an attic. A continuous string course runs along the first floor, stepping up over the door. The entrance features a part-glazed shop door set within a stone four-centred arched opening. On the ground floor, to the left of the door, is a four-light stone mullioned window, with an enlarged centre mullion shared with Minster Cottage. To the right of the door is a 19th-century shop front with a moulded timber cornice and fascia, and a blocked central door. On the first floor, to the left of the door, is a three-light stone mullioned window. To the right of the door are four 20th-century casement windows within ashlar surrounds and keystones. The attic has one gabled dormer with casements. A rear extension dating to the 18th or 19th century has rubble stone walls and a tiled roof. Inside the shop, there is a large open fireplace with a four-centred stone arch. To the left of the fireplace is a semi-circular recess, possibly the site of a newel stair. A single stop-chamfered ceiling beam is also present.
