Description
The Globe, erected in 1891, is located to the southeast of Durlston Head Castle. This stone globe measures about 10 feet in radius and is surrounded by a circle of cast iron railings. At its base, there is a tablet that records the distances between stars and planets. Behind the globe, a series of panels display opposite quotations from the Bible, Shakespeare, the Aeneid, and Tennyson, along with additional tables of distances. Surrounding the globe are 11 posts inscribed with "1815 St Martin" or "St Giles and Bloomsbury," which were acquired by George Burt during his building projects in London. The Globe reflects the Victorian perspective on the world and the universe and is included for its group value.
