Description

This is a terrace of six modest houses built in the early 19th century, likely around 1812. The construction incorporates stuccoed flint, brick, and cob, with a clay tile roof featuring gabled ends. Brick stacks mark the axial and gable ends.

The houses were originally designed as pairs, with a front room and an unheated service room to the rear, plus first-floor and attic chambers. The symmetrical north-east front has six windows, featuring two-light iron-frame casements with small panes, the ground floor windows having segmental heads. Number 17 has replacement windows from the 20th century. Six stuccoed dormers, each with a small two-light wrought-iron casement with leaded panes, light the attic. A single-storey extension from the 20th century is set back on the right side of number 17. The rear elevation has two-light iron-frame casements with leaded panes on the first floor, 19th-century iron roof lights, and 20th-century single-storey extensions.

Inside number 19, original joinery remains, including plank doors. The front first-floor chamber features a fireplace with an iron basket grate, and the attic chamber reveals queen-post roof trusses.

Historical records indicate that Lady Caroline Damer of Milton Abbey contributed to the building of these cottages, offering to fund their construction if the parish covered the associated interest payments. These houses represent a good example of early 19th-century housing for the poor.
