Description
West Burton Farm House is a brick-built farmhouse dating to 1714, as indicated by a dated plan held at Bristol University. The house has a half-hipped tiled roof and brick stacks. It is two storeys high with attics, and follows a three-room lobby entrance plan. Attached to the north is a two-storey outbuilding, sharing the roofline. A single-storey lean-to range originally extended from the rear, and a single-storey wing projects from the front of the outbuilding. A modern brick porch with a tiled roof has been added. The front features a flush door, and ground-floor windows consist of two horizontally sliding sash windows and one casement, all with glazing bars. The first floor has three horizontally sliding sash windows and one fixed window above the porch, also with glazing bars. A plat band runs along the first floor level, and rendered panels surround three of the first-floor windows. Two hipped dormers with horizontally sliding sash windows and glazing bars light the attic. Internally, the partitions between the hall and service rooms have been removed, and the hall contains a large open fireplace with a timber lintel. A brick front boundary wall is also present. The house represents an interesting, dated example of a building with a plan of an archaic type for its time. It is recorded as RCHM Monument 29.
