Description
The New Inn is a detached public house located in Stoke Abbott, with origins in the 18th century and a 19th-century extension that forms an 'L' shape. The building features dressed and rubble stone walls and a thatched roof with gable ends, complemented by brick stacks at both the left and right gables.
On the west elevation, the inn is two storeys high with four windows, which include two- and three-light wooden casements that have glazing bars and wooden cills. There are segmental brick arches over the ground floor windows. The 19th-century extension along the road has matching stone walls and an asbestos slate roof, with one brick stack at the east gable end. It also includes a three-light wooden casement with a horizontal glazing bar. The entrance door is of the plank and muntin type, accessed by five stone steps.
The east elevation of the main range features a pentice slate-roofed corridor that serves as an entry passage, with low brick walls topped by vertical glass lights. Additionally, there is an attached wall running west for 60 metres along the road, made of coursed rubble stone and standing approximately 5 feet high, dating back to around the 18th century.
