Description
Belmont is a Grade II listed building, likely constructed around 1785 for Eleanor Coade, who owned Coade's Patent Artificial Stone Manufactory in Lambeth. The building features a two-storey stuccoed front with five sash windows on each floor. The ground floor windows are round-headed and adorned with architraves that have vermiculated rustications, ornamental impost blocks, and keystones, with a head of Neptune above the door and heads of Amphitrite above the windows. The central window space includes a six-panel door with an ornamental band and a radiating fanlight. A guilloche band runs over the ground floor, while the first floor has plain sash windows. The building is topped with a swagged frieze and a cornice parapet, which is decorated with six Adam-style urns and vermiculated angle rustications. The entire decorative work is made from Coade stone, which contributes to its Grade II status, as well as its association with Eleanor Coade. Belmont is part of a group that includes The Lawn, Hotel Buena Vista, the north boundary walls, Tivoli Cottage, and Nos 14 and 15.
