Description
The Bowdige, Hopkins, and Sherren monuments are three table-tombs located 34-37 metres south of the south aisle of the Church of St Nicholas in Sydling St Nicholas. These early 19th-century stone monuments feature distinct architectural styles.
The first tomb has deep ribbed pilasters and plain sides, topped with a square block, and is dedicated to William Bowdidge, who died in 1804. The second tomb has plain pilasters and sides with vertical divisions, commemorating John Hopkins Senior, who died on July 20, 1811, at the age of 81, and his wife Mary, who passed away on October 22, 1773, at the age of 52. The third tomb features fluted pilasters, two roundels on each side, and a hipped top block, honoring John Sherren and Jean, daughter of Elizabeth Dunning, who died in 1808.
