Description
The Parish Church of SS Magnus the Martyr and Nicholas of Myra is a Grade II* listed building, constructed in 1776 to replace a medieval church. An addition of a north aisle occurred in 1841, and the church was partly rebuilt after sustaining damage during the Second World War. The church features walls made of Portland stone ashlar and a roof that combines stone slates and lead.
The structure includes a nave, an apsidal sanctuary, a north aisle, a west porch, and a tower located south of the nave. The tower, which is taller than the aisle parapet, has two stages and is topped with a carved panelled parapet and pinnacles. It also features a circular window in the upper stage and large traceried windows with pierced stone infill in the second stage. The windows throughout the church exhibit intersecting Gothic tracery, while those in the apse and north aisle are adorned with engraved glass by Laurence Whistler.
The church has carved panelled parapets on the aisle, pew, vestry, and porch. Internally, most fittings were renewed around 1847. Notable features include a significant monument from 1762 dedicated to Mary, wife of James Frampton, as well as other late 18th and 19th-century monuments, primarily for the Frampton family. A brass from 1523 commemorates Jamys Frampton, originating from the earlier church. The nave and apse boast attractive coved plaster ceilings with mock vaulting ribs, exemplifying the early Gothic Revival style.
