Description

The Midland Bank, located at 87 Cheap Street, dates back to 1625 and is a Grade II listed building. At the rear of this modern bank building, there is a preserved section of a timber-framed house that originally faced Long Street. Although the house itself was demolished in 1926, part of the ground floor remains intact. This section features two timber posts with moulded bases and caps, supporting curved braces that hold up oversailing joists. The area between the posts is filled with contemporary muntin and panel work, indicating its late medieval origins. The timber-framed structure at the back of No 87 is part of a group that includes several other notable buildings on Long Street, such as the premises occupied by Mr. Pearson, Rose Cottage, Former Castle Hotel, The Bank House, the National Westminster Bank, Old Bank House, and Abbot's Litten.
