Description
No. 60 St Mary Street is a small house that includes a shop, featuring some 17th century elements and an 18th century front, with modifications made in the 19th century. The front is constructed of painted Flemish bond brickwork, while the rear walls are made of some rubble, and it has an asbestos-cement slate roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has two windows. Above the two sash windows, there is an early roof-light; one window has a glazing-bar upper sash with inserted louvres in the abbreviated lower sash, while the other is a four-pane window, both set in flush boxes. A 20th century shop front and door have been cut into the adjoining property, No. 59, with a supporting cast-iron column inside. To the right, there is an arched opening leading to a throughway. At the rear, over the throughway, is a rubble wall that has remains of a casement with a splayed stone surround. There is also a small parallel range at the gables and a swept-down roof on a brick extension. The interior has not been inspected. This building is a remnant of one of the earliest houses in Melcombe Regis, characterized by low ceiling heights and a very modest front, including the opening to the throughway on the right. Despite the changes to the main elevation, it remains of interest in the street due to its early history.
