Description
No. 59 on St Mary Street is a house with a shop, dating from the early 19th century. The building is rendered, with some Portland ashlar at the rear, a slate-hung right gable, and slate roofs. It features a rear two-storey gabled range. The front has three storeys, with two 12-pane sash windows set in reveals above a single 8:12:8-pane bow oriel that has a dentil cornice and a small cast-iron balcony rail. On the ground floor, remnants of the dentil cornice from the original bow can be seen, but the current shop front is a later 19th-century square bay with three panes, returns, and transom lights. To the right, there is a glazed door with a transom light, set in a reeded doorcase with a dentil cornice, which is part of the original frontage. The adjoining shop front and property at No. 60 is supported under the party wall to No. 59 by a slender cast-iron column. The rear range may be older than the front and includes glazing-bar sashes. The interior has not been inspected.
