Description

This is a row of commercial buildings dating from the early to mid-19th century, continuing a line of properties on the north side of High Street. Number 20 has a rounded corner where the street turns. The roofs are slate and also rounded. Number 20 is three storeys high with an attic containing one dormer window. Numbers 22 and 24 are three storeys high, with one bay each for number 20 and two bays each for numbers 22 and 24. The fronts are cement rendered and divided by rusticated pilasters. A cornice runs along the eaves. The windows are sash windows, and the original glazing bars are intact. The ground floor of number 20 features a shop front and a doorway dating from the same period; a stuccoed plinth is also present, along with a foot scraper. Numbers 22 and 24 have modern shop fronts and fascias. Numbers 12 to 26 (even) and number 26A are grouped together with “The Butt of Sherry” wine bar and the former premises of The Midland Bank, The Commons.
