Description
The Town Hall, built in 1837 by Richard, Marquess of Westminster, is a Grade II listed building. The tower was added in 1879 and rebuilt in 1925, while the ground floor was reconstructed in 1926. This stone ashlar building features a five-window front, with the High Street side being two stories and the Gold Hill side, where the ground slopes, being three stories. It has castellated parapets, and a small central tower with an open pediment and clock. Most windows are five-light casements with Gothic heads and diagonal glazing bars. The lower floors have openings with five-centred heads, and the lower ground floor facing Gold Hill features wrought-iron gates. On the High Street side, there is a central castellated porch and contemporary railings. The Town Hall is part of a group that includes the Church of St Peter, The Mitre Inn, and Nos 25 to 31 (odd).
