Description

The Old Manor House is a manor house dating from the late 16th century, with a rear wing added in the early 17th century. It underwent significant restoration around 1960. The building features rough ashlar walls and a slate roof with parapets and coped gables, along with ashlar stacks at the rear that have diagonally set shafts. It is two storeys high with an attic and has an E-shaped plan, including a central full-height porch and projecting end wings.

The exterior has a moulded plinth and string courses at each floor level, with apex finials on the gables. The porch contains a segmental arched opening with a Coat of Arms above it, and the inner doorway features a depressed four-centred arch. On the first floor, there is a three-light stone mullioned window with lead lights, and a similar two-light window in the attic that has a hoodmould. All windows have moulded bases at the feet of the mullions. The end wings each have four-light windows on the ground and first floors, and three-light windows with hoodmoulds in the attic. The intermediate sections between the wings and the porch have the same window pattern.

The rear wing, located at the right end, is constructed of rubble stone and has a stone slate hipped roof with a central flat. There is a 20th-century reconstructed stair turret at the angle of the two wings, built to match the original construction.

Inside, the hall features a 19th-century staircase brought from another location, which has a closed string, twisted balusters, and a moulded handrail. There are 20th-century door surrounds in a classical style, along with fragments of an original plank and muntin screen. A ground floor room at the right end has a moulded round arched opening leading to the rear wing, and several stone fireplace surrounds with four-centred arches. The original kitchen at the left end contains a large segmental arched fireplace. Some original timber-framed partitions remain, and most of the original roof trusses and purlins are intact. The building was carefully restored by R A Sturdy around 1960 from a state of dereliction.
