Description

The Balston and Stevens Monuments are two table tombs located 1 to 2 metres south of the Church of St Martin in Winterborne St Martin. The first tomb dates from the late 17th century and is made of stone, featuring bulbous end blocks, plain stone sides, and a flat top block with a moulded cornice. It bears the inscription: "Anne, the wife of Morgan Balston died 20 June 1695." The second tomb, from the early 18th century, also has bulbous end blocks, a moulded cornice, and a hipped top block. This tomb is adorned with rosettes and memento mori on the end blocks, and it has the inscription: "Here lyeth the body of Henry Stevens who departed this life the 15th day of March 1708 in the 88th year of his age. This tomb was built by his widow Mary Stevens 1710."
