Description
Rylstone is a farmhouse, originally built in the mid-18th century and later altered and extended around 1840. It was refashioned into a villa at that time. The house is of stone construction, rendered externally, with a slate roof that is hipped and features projecting boxed eaves. Rebuilt 20th-century brick stacks are positioned on the ridge, one to the left and one to the right of centre. The symmetrical front elevation has four windows, each a two-light casement with glazing bars and a high transom; stone sills and high returned labels are above each window. The first floor also has two-light casements with glazing bars. The central front door has six recessed panels and two top lights, with a fanlight above featuring radiating glazing bars; it dates to the 19th century. A porch with timber columns, which have plinths, moulded bases and fluted capitals, sits in front of the door. Above the columns is a plain entablature, also from the early 19th century. Internally, the house has been much altered, although the central entrance hall with its staircase remains. This staircase has stick balusters and a plain handrail. Original six-panel doors and some panelled reveals are also present. A single-and-a-half storey outbuilding, originally stabling, is attached to the west end; it has rubble stone walls and a slate roof with gable ends, and irregular window openings, including one 20th-century French window. Attached front garden walls extend forward of the house, constructed of stone that transitions to brick sleeper walls, surmounted by spearhead railings. Two central rusticated gatepiers with pyramidal capstones frame a gate that matches the railing design.
