Description

Symondsbury College, formerly known as The Manor House, is a college building that dates from the mid-17th century, with an 18th-century extension and late 19th-century alterations. The structure features ashlar stone walls and a plain tile roof with gable ends and tile cresting. It has three stone stacks located at the left gable, left of centre, and the right gable. The stone gable copings have a roll moulding on the upper face. The building is two storeys high and has four windows, which are five and four light stone mullion windows with an ovolo below and cavetto above. The windows are plain, lacking labels. There are two dormers that are tile hung with hipped tile roofs, featuring two-light casements with leaded lights from the 20th century. The front door is centrally located and has been inserted; it features a 4-centred stone head with two-light mullions on each side, dating from the 19th century.

The north wings show 19th-century re-fenestration of the 17th-century core, with 19th-century gables above the upstairs windows. The east wing, built in the 18th century, has brick walls in English bond and a hipped tiled roof at the right-hand end. It features inserted stone mullions of three and four lights with hollow chamfers from the 19th century, and a brick stack located behind the ridge. The doorway on the east wing is left of centre and made of wood with horizontal planks.

Inside, the hall and west room contain massive wood mantelpieces. The caryatid pilasters have voluted abaci and are made from reconstituted material from the 17th century. The west room features square panels of panelling with carved pilaster caryatids at each division, adorned with warrior's heads and vine-scroll motifs. The cornice rail has similar designs, all in low relief, covering an extent of approximately 30 feet by 11 feet on all four walls. The interior exhibits an Italianate style from the 17th century.
