Description
The Rectory is an 18th-century rectory and former house located on Shute’s Lane in Symondsbury. It is constructed of ashlar stone walls with a moulded cornice and a plain parapet. The roof is slate, with stone gable copings hidden behind the parapet. Brick stacks rise from the left and right gables. The building is two storeys high with attics. It has three windows on the front, each a sash window with glazing bars set in flush wooden frames; these windows feature projecting keystones. The central upper window has been blocked with stone, retaining its key. Original glass remains in the windows. Two dormers are present, each with a 2-light casement, glazing bars, an ogee cornice, and a flat lead roof. A verandah runs along the south terrace, featuring trelliswork posts with elliptical heads and a glass pentice roof. The front door is located within a stone porch on the west gable wall, accessed by stone steps and a heavy stone coped parapet. The doorway has a segmental head, and the door is of 20th-century plank construction.
