The Stables, 300 Metres West-South-West Of Sherborne Castle

The Stables, located 300 metres west-south-west of Sherborne Castle, are a Grade II* listed building dated 1759, with the north range and a 15-metre return of the side ranges. The side ranges were extended to the south in the early 19th century. The courtyard walls are made of Ham Hill ashlar, while the other walls are constructed of coursed stone with ashlar quoins. The building features slate roofs and stone stacks on both the west and east ranges.

The structure forms three sides of a square, with the fourth side bordered by dwarf walls and wrought-iron railings, which include a central gateway with wrought iron piers topped with ostriches. The building is two storeys high and has nine bays on the north, east, and west sides, as they were when extended. The north range has a pattern of window-door-window-window-door-window-window-door-window. The ground floor features two-light stone mullioned-and-transomed windows with cornice-labels, while the first floor has two-light stone-mullioned windows. The original leaded lights are intact.

The central doorway has a moulded architrave and contains two stone-mullioned lights above the door, topped with a pediment. The 19th-century doors are recess-panelled, and other doorways have a similar design but lack the pediment. A clock is positioned above the central doorway. Continuous arcading runs over the openings in the side range. The end gables to the south feature a pedimented two-light mullion-and-transom window, with a two-light mullion window above and a roundel in the gable.

Inside, there is an original staircase with a continuous string, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. The stable fittings include cast-iron columns that support semi-circular arcading, with roundels in the soffits displaying ostriches.
