Description
The former stable range and attached courtyard buildings located immediately to the west of Somerford Hall date from the late 18th century to early 19th century. This complex includes a stable with grooms' quarters and a tack room to the north, a cottage that was unoccupied at the time of inspection in July 1991, and a storage block that forms the east and west sides of the yard. There is also a dovecote to the southeast and an additional stable/storage range to the south.
All the buildings are constructed of brick with stone dressings and feature tiled roofs. The stable's frontage is designed to complement Somerford Hall, featuring a central symmetrical two-storeyed range with a layout of 2:7:2 bays. The eastern element has windows flanked by single-storeyed workshops. The central block has outer bays that are pedimented and slightly projecting, with the pediments framing clocks. The structure includes a continuous moulded cornice and a stone plinth. The windows are set under wedge lintels, with some having sashes and others being blocked. There is a central doorway with a plain surround, while the side bays each contain two segmentally-leaded arched doorways; one retains its original panelled double doors, while the other is blocked.
The single-storeyed ranges, which house workshops and tack rooms, display similar architectural details to the main elevation. Minor fittings survive inside. The connecting ranges at the rear are simply treated, and the cottage has irregular fenestration. Both ranges feature wagon entrances. The dovecote is square in plan with a pyramidal roof topped by an octagonal leaded cupola and has no openings except for a doorway to the east. The timber resting boxes have all been removed. The southern range retains some original features, including a cast-iron small-paned window, diagonally planked doors, and a king-post roof. These buildings are included primarily for their group value with Somerford Hall.
