Description
Somerford Hall is a country house, now serving as a medical practice, built in the mid-18th century. The exterior features stucco lined to resemble ashlar, with rusticated quoins and a hipped slate roof, along with brick stacks. It is designed in the Palladian style, consisting of a rectangular main block flanked by pavilions to the north and south. The main block has three storeys, with a moulded plinth and eaves, and a window arrangement of 1:5:1. The end bays are slightly recessed, and the glazing bar sashes are set within moulded architraves and plaster keys. A single-storey porch leads to a six-panelled, double-leaved door, which is flanked by engaged Corinthian columns and topped with a moulded entablature. Above the door is a semi-elliptical fanlight with radiating glazing bars. The flanking pavilions are one storey high, featuring pediments topped with ball ornaments and a central Venetian window flanked by Ionic pilasters.
Inside, there is a notable oak open well staircase with turned balusters, some of which have been restored at the first-floor level. The first floor also contains 18th-century panelled doors. On the ground floor to the west, there is an Adam style room with decorative plasterwork on the walls and ceiling. Somerford Hall was the home of the Monckton family until recently and is set within a landscaped park. Restoration work was ongoing at the time of the last survey in April 1984.
