Description
Keeper's Lodge is a building that likely dates back to the 16th century and was enlarged in the 18th century. The original section features timber-framed walls with brick infill, while the east gable wall has been rebuilt in modern brick. The 18th-century section to the west has brick walls. The building has a thatched roof and brick stacks and is one storey with attics. There is a later single-storey lean-to on the north side with brick walls and a tiled roof. The original structure was designed as an open-hall for its entire length, and there was a further bay to the east that has since been demolished. The first floors and chimneys were likely added in the 17th century. The entrance is located in the lean-to on the north elevation, featuring a part-glazed door.
On the ground floor, there are two modern casement windows with glazing bars, while the attic includes one dormer with an oak mullioned casement with lead lights. The south elevation has two modern casement windows with glazing bars and one small early window with lead lights on the ground floor. There is also a modern window at mezzanine level that lights the stairs. The attic contains two dormers with oak mullioned casements with lead lights, which are probably contemporary with the inserted first floor and stacks.
Inside, the east ground floor room features a large open fireplace with stone jambs and a timber lintel, along with deeply chamfered ceiling beams and exposed joists. There is an original timber-framed partition between the east and central rooms, and the central room has chamfered ceiling beams as well. The chimney in this room has been partly reconstructed, featuring a brick arch. The roof timbers show evidence of smoke-blackening.
