Description

The Rose and Crown Public House is a building that dates back to the 16th century, with possible earlier origins. It was extended to the south and the rear to the north in the 17th century. The front is made of brick, which was added in the late 18th century and is now painted. The structure features a timber frame and has a slate roof, with the south gable end plastered. It stands two storeys tall and has three 19th to 20th-century wooden casement windows, with the upper windows having cambered gauged brick lintels. There is a floor band, and the ground floor includes a door on the right, flanked by canted casement bays. In the left centre, there is a later 17th-century ridge chimney stack with two shafts. Inside, there is a low-ceiling 16th-century bay in the centre, likely a cross wing or an inserted floor. An inglenook fireplace has been added to the north of this bay, featuring a good late 17th-century newel staircase at the rear. The south bay has a chamfer-stopped beam and a smaller staircase. The northern extension is a barn with a tarred plinth and weatherboarded walls. The rear elevation of the main part has, on the left, a late 17th-century red brick stack with two shafts and a large gabled dormer.
