Description
Glebe Cottage, originally the Old Church of Ringstead, dates back to the 13th century and was converted for residential use in the 18th century, with further alterations made in the 20th century, including re-roofing and changes to windows and doors. The building features rubblestone walls and clay tile roofs with gable ends, and has a brick stack on the right-hand gable. It is 1½ storeys high and has two windows with two-light wood casements that include glazing bars, along with wood cills. There is a three-light casement in a 20th-century extension at the west end, and half dormers with gabled two-light casements. The entrance includes a plank door to the right of center leading to a 20th-century rubblestone porch, and another door to the left of center with an external stone seat beside it. The chancel has a wide plinth, and the original east gable line is visible below the current roof line, with no east window present.
Inside, the pointed chancel arch, which is visible upstairs, consists of two chamfered orders and is largely blocked but remains at full height. The original nave has been removed, and 18th-century alterations include a floor inserted in the chancel, supported by a roughly chamfered ceiling beam. There is a fireplace at the east end featuring a chamfered bressummer, a bread oven on the north side, and brick jambs and rear. A log-leg wooden staircase with a door is located beside the fireplace. The attached walls of the former churchyard are made of coursed rubblestone, forming a loose rectangle that measures 30 meters north to south and 17 meters east to west.
