Description
South Down Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating from the early 18th century. It features brick walls in English bond on the front elevation, with rubblestone on the remaining walls. The roof is covered with clay tiles and has stone slate eaves. There are brick stacks at the gable ends, each with moulded cornices. The building is two storeys high and has dormers. The front has five windows with symmetrical arrangements, featuring sashes with glazing bars, segmental heads, and flush wood frames. The windows have stone cills and brick arches with burnt headers and keystones. There are three gabled dormers with two-light casements and tile roofs, which were added in the 20th century.
On both gable ends, there are additions made of rubblestone and brick, topped with pentice clay tile roofs. A plank door is located on the right end, while the central front door is a plank door set in a wood frame, dating from the 19th century. The brick porch has a segmental head, a keystone, and a gabled, tiled roof. At the back, there is a short wing made of rubblestone with brick quoins and a brick stack at the gable end, which was added in the 19th century. Inside, there is a central transverse hall with a room on either side, and ribbed panel window shutters from the 19th century. The farmhouse is accompanied by attached rubblestone front walls that extend for 20 metres by 20 metres.
