Description
The Litton Cheney War Memorial is a memorial dedicated to those who served in the First and Second World Wars, erected around 1920, with the names of the fallen from the Second World War added later.
Constructed from rough-hewn granite set in a concrete foundation, the memorial is located in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, immediately west of the church's porch. It features a Celtic cross with a tapering shaft, approximately 2 meters high, positioned on a trapezoidal plinth and square base that stands 0.8 meters high. A longsword is carved in raised relief on the cross, with the crossguard of the sword aligning with the junction of the cross's shaft and crossarm.
The front of the plinth has a flat recess that bears the inscription: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919" followed by nine names, each accompanied by their service branch or regiment. The base of the memorial is inscribed with "1939-1945" followed by six names and their respective service branch or regiment.
