Description

The Old Rectory is a rectory that has been converted into a house, dating from the mid-18th century, with an added rear wing dated 1845 on the north gable wall. The building features stone walls that are rendered and has slate roofs with parallel ridges, along with two rear ridges that have composite brick stacks in the valley. It is two storeys high with attics and has six windows, consisting of five and one sashes with glazing bars, which are 20th-century replacements. The stone window surrounds and cills are original. An additional bay was added to the left side around 1900. The dormers have three 2-light casements with hipped slate roofs, also 20th-century. The front door is centrally located and features nine glass lights from the 19th century, with a wooden trelliswork porch topped by a flared lead roof, also from the 19th century. The rear wing, which is at right angles to the main building, is two storeys high and has two windows with 2-light cast-iron casements that have many glazing bars, dating from the mid-19th century. A small wooden bellcote is situated on the rear ridge. Inside the main house, there are flagstones in the central hall, fielded-panel doors, and window shutters. The house was the residence of the 20th-century painter, engraver, and letterer Reynolds Stone, who was born in 1909 and died in 1979, and is buried in the churchyard of Litton.
