Description
The cottage at Leigh Common dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It features walls made of flint and cob, with some parts colorwashed, and was extended to the north in brick during the late 19th century. The roof is thatched, and there are two brick stacks, one at the right end of the original building and another at the right end of the later section. The cottage is two storeys high with a simple two-room layout. It has a ledged door set in a verandah-type porch supported by brick piers, topped with a pantile roof. In the original section, there is one horizontally sliding sash window on the first floor, while the later section includes one casement window with glazing bars on each floor. The interior remains largely unaltered, featuring a main room with a large open fireplace, a timber lintel, and a bread oven. This cottage was likely originally built as a squatter's dwelling on the verge of the highway.
