Description
This is a threshing barn, likely built in 1772. It is made of red brick, with some blue brick and stone detailing, and features an oak roof structure covered in slate.
The barn has a seven-bay layout with central doors on opposing sides, a south-facing porch, and a side door on the west side. The north and south elevations are supported by eight brick buttresses with stone caps. The porch displays the letters ‘E P’ and the numerals ‘7 2’ in blue brick. The lateral buttress at the south-east corner of the porch has been damaged. Each bay, except for the central threshing bay, has sealed ventilation slits with chamfered reveals and timber lintels.
The roof structure consists of six oak trusses with raised collars and two rows of through purlins, with pegged collars between the purlins. Oak braces within the walls support each truss. There are some areas of disturbed brickwork around the ventilator openings, and empty mortices in the principals near the ridge height suggest a historic raising of the roof angle. The north double entrance doors are timber boarded, framed, braced, and ledged, featuring iron strap hinges, while the south porch doors are made of metal. The floors are finished with concrete.
