Description

Nos. 6-12 Crescent Street is a terrace of seven houses built around 1800-1810. The buildings are rendered and feature slate or asbestos-cement slate roofs, with concrete tiles on the upper slope of No. 9. This terrace is part of a larger development, with Nos. 33 and 34 on the opposite side of the street being the best examples. Each house has a mansard roof with two levels of accommodation, and they are generally one window wide, except for No. 9, which is wider. Original dormers are present in Nos. 8 and 9, while Nos. 6 and 9 feature a full-height bow with curved 16-pane sash windows. Many of the original sash windows have been replaced in other properties.

No. 10 has been refaced and has an additional main storey with reduced attic space. It features a canted two-storey oriel window above a 19th-century shop front with four vertical lights, pilasters with consoles, and a dentilled fascia cornice. Each house has an arched doorway with replacement doors; Nos. 6, 7, and 8 have radial fanlights, while No. 9 has a blocked fanlight and an extra bay to its left, which includes a 20th-century door under a blocked opening and an additional dormer. The terrace has a small plinth, a mid-height plain string, and a cornice on No. 6, which is simplified on Nos. 7, 8, and 9. Nos. 11 and 12 have paired brick 'dentils', and there is a blocking course and parapet, except for No. 10. Nos. 6 and 9 have a ridge stack to the right, and there is a shared ridge stack for Nos. 11 and 12. The interior has not been inspected. Although the design was originally consistent, the roofs suggest that the houses were built separately rather than as a single terrace. Despite various alterations, this remains the best minor terrace on the street.
