Description
The Jubilee Clock Tower is a memorial clock tower built in 1887 to celebrate the Jubilee of Queen Victoria. It was a gift from Sir Henry Edwards. The structure is made of cast and wrought iron set on a stone base. It features a large four-faced clock beneath a square ogee cupola, resting on a broad moulded base. The square shaft has a deep frieze adorned with anthemion decoration and a flared cornice. Each face of the shaft displays two panels, one featuring the Queen's head and the other the Weymouth arms. The shaft flares out to four plinth panels topped with segmental pediments. Three of the faces are inscribed with "Erected to commemorate the Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen 1887. John Groves, Mayor," while the seaward face states, "Jubilee Memorial Erected by Public Subscription. The clock being the gift of Sir Henry Edwards." The four faces are connected in an octagonal shape, supported by a circular moulded base, which is set on a shallow multangular stone base. This tower adds a decorative and vibrant feature to the seafront.
