Description

The Weymouth D-Day Port Memorial is a war memorial located on the east side of The Esplanade, completed in 1947. Made of Portland stone, it features an octagonal pedestal with fielded panels. The east panel is inscribed with the date "UNVEILED / DECEMBER 3RD / 1947" and includes a copper plaque presented by the 14th Major Port, United States Army, in memory of American servicemen. The pedestal supports a base that carries a pillar, which has inset bronze decorative grilles on four sides. The pillar consists of two stages: the lower section is square with deep mouldings at the corners, while the upper section is octagonal. At the top, there is a lamp with leaded lights that is never extinguished.

Weymouth was significant during World War Two, serving as a departure point for over half a million American servicemen heading to the beaches of Normandy, including the 1st Infantry Division and Ranger units, from June 6, 1944, until the war's end on May 7, 1945. The memorial was erected to honor their contributions and sacrifices. In recent years, several plaques have been added to commemorate the involvement of American troops during the war, specifically in 1999, 2002, and 2004. The memorial is recognized for its dignified symbolism and its poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by American servicemen, as well as its group value with other listed buildings, including the World War One Cenotaph located to the northeast.
