Description

Nos. 86 and 87 Gloucester Row are a pair of houses built around 1790 by James Hamilton. They feature Flemish bond brickwork, with flared headers at the third floor, and have a slate roof. Both houses are four storeys high with a basement and have three windows. They share identical architectural details but are separated by a straight joint. The windows have plain sashes beneath wide plain stone lintels with keystones, and there is a stone sill band at the third floor. The second floor has stone sills, and No. 86 includes a balcony on brackets with a wrought-iron balustrade at the first floor. At this level, the deep windows extend down to the floor. No. 86 has an original six-panel door set in an arched opening with a plain fanlight and fluted architrave. In contrast, No. 87 features a late 20th-century shop front with a deep fascia, and its balcony has been removed. The steps leading to the basement area of No. 86 are enclosed by spearhead railings. Both houses have central and end brick stacks. The interior has not been inspected. These houses were constructed as an annexe to Gloucester Lodge for use when the Royal Family was in residence, and the top floor was added later.
