Description

The promenade shelter, located opposite number 88 on the Esplanade in Weymouth, was built in the late 19th century by Bird and Cox, contractors from Weymouth. This structure is made of cast iron and wood, featuring timber glazed panels and a painted wood roof. It has a low-pitched hipped roof adorned with small gablets and intricate cast-iron fretted decorations along the ridge and eaves on all sides. The shelter is open-sided with two bays supported by three pairs of slender turned wood columns, which have cast-iron fretted brackets. The ceiling consists of a grid of moulded beams and a panelled soffit divided into twelve compartments, with diagonal 'dragon beams' in the corner bays. The glazed screens include a central mullion and a transom at the height of the brackets. Wooden slatted seats are attached to cast-iron scrolled brackets. This shelter is one of seven similar structures in the area and is well-maintained. It is set back from the edge of the promenade, although it would have originally been positioned at the edge with its own railed balcony; the promenade has since been extended. The original lead-covered roof has been replaced with a painted timber imitation, which includes rolls, while the rest of the detailing remains original.
