ST 60 SE ALTON PANCRAS VILLAGE STREET (WEST SIDE)

8/16 Probable Icehouse, approximately 8 m south of Alton Pancras Manor GV II

Probable Ice house, possibly of C17 origin. Brick (English bond) with pointed brick vault. Doorway of stone having 3-centred head with straight chamfer with continuous, stopped jambs. Folding, wooden plank door. Vaulted chamber is partly underground and divided into two, one part having been used for cidermaking. It is incorporated into a later range of brick, tiled, gable-ended out buildings. RCHM, Dorset, vol III, p 2, no 2.
