Description
The drinking fountain, built in 1853, is located 17 meters south-east of the Church of St Mary. It is made of limestone ashlar and features a rectangular shape with flat coping stones and a plinth. The upper part of the fountain is constructed over an existing boundary wall. It has a central recess with a semi-circular head, tooled voussoirs, an impost string course, and a projecting rectangular stone trough. The rear wall of the recess includes a tap, which may have replaced a spout, and bears an inscription in black lettering that reads: "1853 / WHOSOEVER DRINKETH OF THIS / WATER SHALL THIRST AGAIN; BUT / WHOSOEVER DRINKETH OF THE WATER / THAT I SHALL GIVE HIM SHALL NEVER / THIRST; BUT THE WATER THAT I SHALL / GIVE HIM SHALL BE IN HIM A WELL OF / WATER SPRINGING UP INTO EVER / LASTING LIFE. JOHN 4th 13 & 14." The boundary wall against which the fountain is built is not considered to have special architectural or historic interest and is excluded from the listing.
