Description

This 1880 office block, designed by G R Crickmay of Weymouth, was part of Messrs Eldridge Pope’s Brewery. It is constructed of yellow, red, and brown brick with a slate roof. The building has three storeys at the ends and two in the middle, with red brick stacks featuring ashlar cornicing. Two end bays project forward and are topped with hipped roofs, ornamented with stone brackets to the eaves.

The ground floor entrance is within a recessed bay, featuring a semi-circular relieving arch over the door. This arch’s tympanum is decorated with patterned and moulded brick. The first floor has two tripartite sash windows, each with a segmental relieving arch filled with glazed tiles. The second floor features two pairs of paired sashes, separated by squat attached columns with crocketed capitals. A hoodmould arches over a panel displaying a shield bearing the Eldridge Pope monogram.

The next two bays display a parapet inscribed with "Dorchester Brewery" in a sans-serif font, supported by stone brackets. The final bay has a pyramidal roof with similar stone eaves brackets. The ground floor of this section has a single round-arched sash window, flanked by squat attached columns with crocketed capitals. The first floor contains a single sash window with a segmental head, while the second floor consists of three sashes separated by squat attached columns with crocket capitals. A moulded terra-cotta band runs below the second-floor sills. The entire building is part of a group of listed buildings associated with Messrs Eldridge Pope’s Brewery.
