Description

This is a lighthouse with coastguard accommodation, built in 1906 by Wakeham Brothers of Plymouth at a cost of approximately £13,000. It replaced the earlier Old Higher and Old Lower Lighthouses. The lighthouse has a tall, 35-metre tapered shaft topped by a moulded cornice. A cylindrical domed lantern sits atop the shaft, set within a balcony featuring a cast-iron balustrade of twelve bays with moulded posts and three plain rails. The shaft’s exterior is painted render, and the coastguard house has a flat roof, likely covered in asphalt. Deep-set two-light casements with raised lintels and heavy cills are found in five stages, and a Trinity House badge is set into the south face. An entrance door is on the north-west side.

The single-storey coastguard house, linked to the lighthouse, is two storeys high and four bays wide. It features mainly two-light casements with transoms and stooled cills. Projecting, flat-roofed porches with part-glazed doors are located in the second bay from the south on each side. A lower link also provides entry to the tower. A single-storey wing extends the full width of the north end of the coastguard house. The entire structure sits on a plinth and has a heavy moulded cornice. Four large stacks with heavy cappings are set into the flat roof.

The complex is enclosed by a rubble boundary wall, painted externally, with half-cylindrical coping approximately 1.5 metres high. Pairs of square gate piers with pyramidal cappings and wooden gates are located on the east and west sides of the link block. Similar walls extend from each side of the house, creating an enclosure. A service building in the south-east corner has cast-iron ventilator grilles. The whole group is considered complete and historically significant, complementing the two earlier lighthouses.
