Description
The sea walls at Gun Cliff are located on the southeast side of Bridge Street in Lyme Regis. These walls are among the most easterly sea forts in the area and played a role in Blake's defense of Lyme during the English Civil War, remaining in place until the early 19th century. Constructed from stone rubble laid in regular courses, the walls vary in height and feature ledges in some areas. One section of the wall extends north from Cobb Gate Jetty, then east around the back of Nos 1 and 2 Broad Street, and continues north to Buddle Bridge. Another section returns south from the opposite side of the bridge and then east around Gun Cliff, curving north again before extending east to the jetty at the eastern end of the Marine Theatre. Craftsmen from Lyme Regis were renowned for their expertise in building piers and sea defenses during medieval times, and these walls, along with the older parts of the Cobb, exemplify this craftsmanship. From the sea, the sea walls at Gun Cliff form a group with the Museum and Guildhall, as well as the rear faces of Nos 1 and 2 Broad Street.
