Description
North Lodge to Dean's Court is a former lodge dated 1715, which is likely the year the original building was constructed. The main part of the lodge faces the road and was originally one room deep, with a projecting rear wing that is of the same date or slightly later. The main range was extended to the north in the late 18th to early 19th century and later increased to two rooms deep in the 19th century. There is a modern garage addition to the north.
The building features brick walls that are rendered on the front elevation, with tiled roofs and brick stacks. The front elevation has an entrance designed in an early Gothic Revival style. The door is curved in plan, with side panels that create a slightly recessed porch featuring a four-centred arch and a fanlight. To the south of the door, there is a pair of Gothic-style French doors, while to the north are two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars. The first floor has three similar windows and a plat band at the first floor level. The attic includes three dormers, two of which have lead lights, and one with plain fixed glazing.
At the rear, the projecting wing has two double-hung sash windows and a larger window with Gothic-style glazing on the ground floor, along with double-hung sash windows on the first floor. Where the main range has been extended, the roof has been flattened in pitch and slated, with half-dormers featuring double-hung sashes on each side of the projecting wing.
Internally, there is a late 18th to early 19th-century stair that rises around an open well behind the main range. The stair has a cut-string form, with spandril brackets, plain square balusters, and a moulded handrail. Above the stair at attic level is a gallery that is not accessible from the first floor, and there is a coved plaster ceiling above the stairwell.
