Description
The Former Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, dated 1851, was designed by architects Morris and Hebson. This imposing, nearly symmetrical building is constructed in a Tudor style and features two storeys with attics. It is made of red brick with blue diaperwork, complemented by stone mullioned windows and dressings. The roof is tiled and adorned with ornamental cresting tiles, along with several plain rectangular stacks.
At the center, there is a coped gable that showcases a Perpendicular style traceried window with a niche above it on the first floor. Below this, a Tudor arched door with decorated spandrels has been converted into a window, flanked by single light stone windows. Slightly projecting towers are located to the right and left, each featuring narrow Tudor arched doors on the ground floor and first floor, with crocketted statue niches flanked by small stone windows. Above these towers are octagonal brick and stone lanterns topped with original lead cupolas, stone gargoyles, and weathervanes.
To the right of the central gable is a section that includes a four-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor, with a three-light window above it. The corresponding section on the left has two similar windows, all three-light. At the extreme ends of the front, there are slightly projecting gabled wings that feature canted stone mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor and stone mullioned windows with hood moulding on the first floor.
