Description
St Joseph's, located at No. 5 King Street, is a building with probable origins in the 16th century. It features timber-framed walls, some of which have been replaced with brick, and has tiled roofs with stone eaves courses. The building has an L-shaped plan and includes a through-passage at the west end. It stands two storeys high with attics. The elevation facing King Street displays a cross gable that contains the upper storey windows. The ground floor features a wide ledged door leading to the through-passage, along with one modern casement window that has lead lights and shutters. The first floor has one original oak mullioned window with lead lights, while the attic includes a small original mullioned window. The main oak corner posts are adorned with carved heads. The east elevation shows exposed timber framing, partially replaced with brick, and has modern timber casement windows, along with signs of earlier built-up openings. Inside, there are deep chamfered beams on the first floor. This building is a good example of an early town house.
