Description

This building is a barn with shippons and a mangel house, dating from around the mid-19th century. It features granite rubble walls with dressed granite quoins, sills, jambstones, and lintels. The roof is made of cement-washed scantle slate and has dressed granite coped gable ends. The structure has an L-shaped plan, with the mangel house attached to the far outside rear corner of the east-west range.

The main openings are located at the inside angle of the L, specifically on the north and east fronts. Granite steps lead to a loading door at the left-hand (east) gable end. Historically, there was a mill wheel at the opposite (west) end, which powered barn and mangel slicing machinery using water from a storage pond. The rear openings match those at the front.

The barn is two storeys high. The symmetrical north face has three openings on each floor, with doorways on the left and right; there is a window above each doorway and a central loading door above the ground floor window. The east face of the wing, which adjoins at a right angle, has a similar arrangement, but the first-floor loading door is located in the left-hand bay. The building features ledged and braced doors, and some first-floor windows retain their original glazing, which includes a 12-pane fixed light over a transom with a mullion separating two small shutters below.

Inside, the original roof structure remains, but the floors and fittings have all been removed. This barn and mangel house is part of a group of farm buildings associated with Godolphin House.
