Description
Chyoone Cross is a wayside cross located in St Buryan, likely dating from the late 9th century or early 10th century. It is a granite monolith shaped like a Latin cross, set into a roughly square granite base. The southeast face of the cross head features a relief figure of Christ at the intersection of the limbs, while the northwest face displays a slender low relief Latin cross. St Buryan is known for its historical significance as the site of a traditional Celtic monastery, which is believed to have been founded by Athelstan in the early 10th century. This cross is the largest known example in a series of crosses that bear the Christ motif, which inspired the development of a highly elaborate series of decorated crosses in west Cornwall during the mid-10th century.
