Talehay Farmhouse And Barn Adjoining On East

Talehay Farmhouse and Barn are a farmhouse with a barn adjoining on the east side, located in Pelynt. The farmhouse dates to the early 17th century, with a rear wing added around the early 18th century. The farmhouse is constructed of stone rubble with a slate roof featuring gable ends. There are projecting stone rubble chimney stacks, one in the gable at the lower end, another laterally to the rear at the higher end, and a third in the gable end of the rear wing, from which the shaft has been removed.

Originally, the farmhouse plan comprised two rooms of roughly equal size, likely with a widened through passage. The higher end has a rear lateral chimney stack, and the lower end a gable end stack. A stair projection existed at the lower side of the passage, leading to a rear doorway. This stair has been removed and replaced with a 19th-century stair inserted into the likely widened through passage. A heated rear wing, probably a parlour, was added around the early 18th century at the lower end, creating an overall ‘L’ shaped plan.

The front elevation is asymmetrical, featuring three windows. On the ground floor is a 20th-century window to the left and a 19th-century three-light casement window to the right of a central 19th-century panelled door, which is sheltered by a late 19th/20th-century glazed gabled porch. Slate strings are above the ground floor windows. The first floor has three 20th-century windows placed asymmetrically.

Internally, ceiling beams have been renewed and chimney pieces are 20th century. A 19th-century stair is located within the side of the through passage. The through passage has been retained and the first-floor ceilings are sealed. Roof timbers were not inspected.

The barn, dating to the early 19th century, adjoins the farmhouse at the right-hand lower gable end. It is constructed of stone rubble and cob, with concrete block repairs, and has a corrugated iron roof with gable ends. It is two storeys high and asymmetrical, with a plank door on the ground floor and a further part-glazed 20th-century door to the right. The interior of the barn was not inspected.
