Description
Rose Cottage is a small house dating from the 18th century, situated in Churchtown, Germoe. It is constructed of painted rubble with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, sills, and lintels. The roof is covered in slurried scantle slate, with brick chimneys at each gable end. Originally a two-room plan, with a parlour to the left and a kitchen/living room to the right, the building was built into a bank at the rear. In the 19th century, it was converted into two cottages, resulting in a larger fireplace being inserted into the left-hand room and a second doorway being cut to the right of the current entrance (this doorway is now blocked). It is now again a single house, with a small 20th-century addition to the left and a 20th-century sun lounge at the rear, at mid-floor level. The north front has a near-symmetrical two-window arrangement, with a doorway slightly to the left of center. A 20th-century divided-ledged door and 20th-century 12-pane horizontal sash windows (replicas of replaced windows) are set within the original openings. The interior features open-beam ceilings, a straight staircase from the 19th century, and large stone fireplaces at each gable end. The roof structure is said to date from around the late 19th century. Rose Cottage is part of a group of buildings located near the Church of Saint Germoe.
