Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a parish church built around 1900. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with limestone dressings and features a slate roof adorned with crested ridge tiles and cross finials. The church has a plan that includes a nave and chancel combined, a south porch, and a circular south stair tower that leads to a lower room, as well as a north organ chamber.

In the Gothic style, the exterior showcases a west end with tall paired lancets and a gable that projects forward as a bellcote, which houses a bell. The south side features two paired lancets, two single lancets to the right, and one to the left. The stair tower on the right has stepped lancets, while the left side has a gabled porch with a rounded arched doorway and double doors fitted with strap hinges. The north side of the nave includes a stepped stack with a brick shaft rising from the eaves, a paired lancet and a single lancet to the right, and a paired lancet with two single lancets to the left. The organ chamber slightly projects and has a similar stack with a shaped stone shaft rising from the eaves, along with a single lancet to its left. The east end features scalloped bargeboards on the gable end and a triple lancet, with the central light being taller. The basement has two paired lancets with a lintel string, and on the south side of the chancel at basement level, there is a two-centred arched doorway with a plain door and strap hinges.

Inside, the porch has a common rafter roof, and the inner doorway features a chamfered four-centred arch with double doors that have strap hinges. The nave and chancel are unified under an eight-bay roof supported by scissors trusses, with painted brick walls and blocked fireplaces. There is a wooden arch with stone corbels leading to the organ chamber, and the south door to the stair tower has a four-centred arch. The fittings include a wooden pulpit and pews, as well as an octagonal stone font in the nave, all of which are contemporary with the church.
